Wilkie Collins was an extremely prolific English author, best known as the originator of the ‘sensation novel’, a new genre of fiction and precursor to detective fiction. The Woman in White (1860) is regarded as the first of such novels, followed by No Name (1862), Armadale (1866), and The Moonstone (1868). His novels brought him both wealth and fame during his lifetime, and he became a public figure both praised and satirised.
